Consumers in Debt

  • In the 12 months prior to March 2011, 9 percent of American adults have been late making a credit card payment. This is compared to 12 percent in the same 12 months in 2010 and 15 percent in the same 12 months in 2009.

  • More than 1 in 4 American adults (28 percent) admit to not paying their bills on time and 7 percent have debts in collection. This compared to 26 percent of Americans, or more than 58 million adults, who admitted to not paying their bills on time in 2009.
